Historical Significance:
This marker commemorates the north entrance to the Old Walled City which was the second entrance to the Spanish Presidio Real de San Agustín del Tucson. Also known as the Old Walled City of Tucson, it became part of the United States with the Gadsden Purchase in 1853 as the largest city within the Gadsden Purchase.
This marker was dedicated on the same day as the marker at the south entrance and has the same wording: “DAR / Tucson Old Walled City / Founded 1776 by Spanish Government as a Presidio / Became Part of U.S. after Gadsden Purchase 1853 / Erected 1936.” This marker was never placed at the exact site of the gateway.
The letters D, A, and R have been replaced, and some photographs reveal their absence.
